According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded at approximately 11:15 a.m. Wednesday to a serious two-vehicle crash on NC 27 in Lincoln County. Investigators reported that a 2001 Ford Expedition traveling westbound crossed the center line of the roadway and collided head-on with a 2016 Volvo traveling eastbound.
The impact created a devastating scene as the Ford Expedition caught fire following the collision. Emergency responders rushed to the area to secure the crash site, assist those involved, and begin the difficult process of investigating what led to the deadly accident.
The driver of the Ford Expedition, identified as 52-year-old Kevin Lee Long of Iron Station, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for medical treatment.
